Chapter 1: The Voice

Rain had always had a strange ability to calm Tom Walker. Even as a child, long before technology transformed the world into something his younger self could never have imagined, there had been something comforting about the sound of water striking glass.

Outside the windows of his workshop, London glistened beneath the endless rain. Streams of autonomous vehicles moved silently through the streets below, their headlights reflecting across the wet roads like ribbons of light. Towering buildings disappeared into the clouds while holographic advertisements flickered through the darkness.

Tom preferred it that way.

His workshop occupied the ground floor of an old industrial building that had somehow survived decades of redevelopment. Most people would have described the room as a mess. Tools covered nearly every available surface. Cables hung from the walls. Half-finished machines waited patiently in dark corners.

To Tom, however, it looked like home.

At thirty years old, he had spent most of his life solving problems. Machines had always made more sense to him than people. Machines followed rules. They behaved logically. If something broke, there was always a reason.

Ever since losing his hearing at the age of four, he had adapted to a world that often seemed determined to leave him behind. Modern technology had changed that. The neural implant resting beneath his hair was one of the most advanced devices available, translating sound directly into electrical signals his brain could understand.

He had just reached for his mug when a strange pulse surged through the implant beneath his hair. The sensation caught him so completely off guard that the mug slipped from his fingers and shattered against the tiled floor.

Static flooded his mind.

Then, through the interference, a voice whispered three impossible words.

“Find the Key.”
